GREENING THE WAY FORWARD: SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AND SYSTEMS

19TH - 20TH SEPTEMBER 2024, ROME (ITALY)

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Gonçalo Homem de Almeida Correia

Dr. Gonçalo Correia graduated in civil engineering from IST Lisbon, Portugal, where he also did his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Transport & Planning at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands. His main research interest is in the planning and operations of transport systems in urban environments to foster sustainable development. He focuses particularly on studying the use of Transport Demand Management strategies, innovative services, and technologies, such as ridesharing, carsharing, vehicle automation, and mobility electrification to increase transport sustainability. His research methodologies primarily involve operations research techniques such as mathematical optimization and simulation, as well as data-driven AI methods and behavior modeling. He has led several projects among which the V2G-QUESTS recently funded in the first Driving Urban Transitions call in Europe. He is the author of about 100 scientific publications in several journals including all journals of the Transportation Research series edited by Elsevier. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the first journal published by Nature in the field of transport: npj Sustainable Mobility and Transport. He coordinates the Traffic and Transportation track of the master program in Civil Engineering at TU Delft. Gonçalo advises several companies and institutions on the future of mobility and he is an international speaker on the impacts of mobility innovations. Gonçalo co-directs the hEAT lab (research on electric and automated transport) which he founded at TUDelft: https://www.tudelft.nl/citg/over-faculteit/afdelingen/transport-planning/labs/heat-lab-1

Navigating the Future: Strengths and Challenges of Emerging Urban Transport Services and Technologies

In this keynote, Gonçalo Correia will discuss the transformative mobility innovations that have emerged in urban areas over the past decade. He will present both the strengths and challenges of these cutting-edge technologies in addressing critical urban mobility issues such as traffic congestion, emissions, and inequities in accessibility. Drawing from a rich array of case studies, methodologies, and data sources, Gonçalo will dive into topics such as vehicle automation, electrification, and shared mobility. He will examine the potential of these trends to resolve urban mobility problems, while also highlighting the hidden pitfalls and considerations that are crucial if we are going to increase mobility sustainability
